At the same time I engaged in Principles of Distance Education (EDD 7007), I was also engaging in Principles of Instructional Technology (EDD 8008). Similar to EDD 7007, I entered EDD 8008 with a preconception. For this course, my conception was that instructional technology was limited to electronic means such as video and audio. Within the first two weeks of this course, this conception was altered. Through the initial readings about the history of technology and education, I quickly recognized that technology represents any and all means of communicating information, most significantly recognizing that books are a form of technology.

Similar to the definition of distance education that was discussed in EDD 7007, was the discussion about the definition of instructional technology in this course. The definition discussed was the 1994 Association for Educational Communications and Technology (AECT) definition. “Instructional technology is the theory and practice of design, development, utilization, management and evaluation of processes and resources for learning” (Seels, B. & Richey, R, 1994). This definition was at the forefront of the first class discussion. Dr. Schlosser asked each of us to critically analyze the definition in respect to its validity and influence. Generally, I concluded that this definition was appropriate for the time due to the fact that it clearly appears to be an evolutionary definition which respects the past, supports the present, and plans for the future.

This course also represented my first formal exposure to educational theories. In piecemeal ways during my career I had been exposed to behaviorism, cognitivism, and constructivism, although I had never done any formal reading about them. After completing this section of the course, I adopted the philosophy that no single theory is better than another and that a combination of each theory’s principles may offer the best educational experience.
