Prior to enrolling in EDD 9100 I suspected the course would be challenging, yet thoroughly engaging at the same time. Now that I have completed the course, I can say my suspicion was true. My years practicing instuctional design have earned me respect from my fellow colleagues as a subject matter expert in the field performance improvement --- what was lacking was an understanding of how I was doing as a leader. This course provided me numerous opportunities to reflect on my leadership skills and make adjustments where necessary. Following Clawson's suggestion that leaders need to define their values, assumptions, beliefs, and expectations (VABEs), I took some time to complete the task. Here are my VABEs which I perceive as being the most signicant demonstration of how I have grown professionally.
Values
- I value integrity, perfection, and holistic thinking.
- I value honesty, respect, and open minds.
- I value organization, focus, and tools for success.
- I value family and friends, social time away from work, and balance between work and play.
Assumptions
- I assume all leaders recognize the influence their actions hold.
Beliefs
- I believe leaders must be cognizant of their actions to effectively set an example.
- I believe the smallest of errors on the part of a leader can have monumental impacts on those who observe the error.
- I believe everyone has the ability to be a leader.
- I believe organizations may be barriers to individual success.
- I believe learning and development professionals need to have formal education to be effective performance professionals.
- I believe exemplary on-the-job performance alone does not qualify an individual to be a learning and development professional.
- I believe technology supports, but does not lead missions, visions, and strategies.
- I believe change is the only constant.
- I believe I influence the success of others.
Expectations
- I expect those who are in superior roles to me to demonstrate and set an example that is equal to and more free of errors that what I do.
- I expect those who are peers to me to demonstrate and set an example that is equal to what I do.
- I expect all others to strive to do their best by seeking out opportunities for improvement that align with organizational missions, visions, and strategies.
